I should be an Ad-man

I don't know why the Conservative party is bothering with all these giant posters plastered with Cameron's shiny face, or someone on benefits telling us that it's time for change. All they need is the following (black writing on a white background):

"Dear reader,

This is a campaign poster for the Conservative party. Labour can't afford to have these because they have no money. Economic management is not their strong point. Perhaps you've noticed. Vote Conservative"

  1. I don't know where the Labour campaign posters have got to. I imagine it's a much tougher job air brushing Gordon than just-call-me-Dave. After all, Dave is 'naturally baby-faced.' But I do know this, the Central Office of Information, which manages the government’s annual advertising and marketing budget, has been tossing money all over the place. "In the 12 months to the end of March 2009 the COI's budget increased by 43% year on year," with a 35% increase in spending on TV, Press and Radio, and an 84% increase (up to £40m) on digital marketing (the guardian).

And why, only recently the COI announced a "consolidated" media-buying deal with Group M, part of Sir Martin Sorrell's WPP Group. As the Private Eye points out, this is the same WPP that has moved its HQ to a Jersey based parent-company. So that's public money for taxes dodgers, right?

Acquisitions like this defy advertising trends. Nielsen figures released the other week “show that 15 of the UK's 20 top agencies saw their billings fall in 2009 as advertisers' media spend plummeted” (eye). This government just won’t lay down. They’ve got adverts coming out the yin-yang, particularly on Radio, where you can hear all about the ‘Getting Maths Confident’, ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’, ‘Jobcentre Plus’ and ‘Build a Better’ Future campaigns.

Indeed, the COI wouldn't even reveal to the Private Eye the adspend figures for the year to date, at least not until after the election. They’ll probably be massive.

Virtually all from the private eye (thanks)
